Regarding lawyers representing the union. I remember when I filed a small claims case against the UFT, for unpaid wages I was promised as an arbitration advocate, the director of the grievance department showed up with a UFT lawyer to fight my claim. I won that case. In parting, mentioned to the arbitrator that I pay that lawyer’s salary through my dues. SMH

It's really incredible UFT lawyers oppose us at all, ever. Mulgrew has no scruples whatsoever, it's plainly evident, and this will continue until and unless we stop his patronage cult. They've coated our whole union in a self-serving apathy.

Well-said (or more like, well-written) Arthur. Once again, you nailed it, holding truth to power.

Thanks Glenn!

Regarding the close vote on the Reso asking for the censorship of the delegate assembling regarding matters that are not directly of the unions concern, like matters of foreign policy: it was a close vote was it not? I thought Michael Shulman did an excellent job arguing against it. I would add that it seems like the person advancing the resolution is probably not happy with the way public opinion has turned against a particular client state in the Middle East and wants to stop the momentum against the genocidal state. Personally, I think when school children are bombed with weapons we pay for with our tax dollars, it is our business. I’m aghast that it was a close vote. And there wasn’t a definitive announcement that it lost either. We just sort of heard the numbers and quickly had to do the math in our heads. I guess we still have a lot brainwashed baby boomers in DA.

Why no talk about labor wins? From LA (even Randi was there) to our Doormen to our hotel workers to LIRR. These are big wins that should be celebrated. Instead we are told to ask for a pass. We are almost in parody territory. Our, "very smart people" should be able to talk about "strike" and job actions without being afraid of the "taylor law" Something as simple as "no contracts, no SBOs"

You will likely not be surprised to learn Mulgrew rarely consults me for talking points. And who can blame him? I'd likely suggest at least occasional variations from, "We're the best of all possible leaders negotiating the best of all possible contracts in the best of all possible ways."

ps I thought Michael Schulman spoke eloquently in answer to the "Know Nothing" Resolution from "Karen" (?)- which HAD to be answered then & there...very dangerous notion she brought forward, one that would make Mulgrew sooo very happy, if it came to pass. AND- it was sooo close!!!

Arthur Goldstein's avatar

I'm not sure it would make Mulgrew happy. His purpose at the DA is more to prevent things from happening than allow them. So the more stuff he can fill space with, the fewer inconvenient member-initiated resolutions hit the floor. The only thing they care about is Mulgrew's speech, and you can tell that from the fact that Mike Sill sends out a summary that contains nothing whatsoever about member interaction. They don't even know what a union is anymore.

Excellent summary, of a wacked-out Mulgrew performance, Arthur! I was a call-in, &

I wanted to ask about endorsements (esp about Lander & Goldman, & others, too), & I was explaining my question, I was cut off, & put to the meeting, as it was starting; I was never called.

I think she said her name was Doris- very rude to do that, but I bet, typical... turned out, Bennett brought it up "live", but she couldn't have been thinking that, right? By the way, why is it we can't have a ZOOM virtual, like the RTC do?

Arthur Goldstein's avatar

Thanks for your kind words. I have no idea why they don't do the Zoom virtual, but since I'm kind of furiously taking notes I barely have time to look anyway. I may be able to attend the last one in person, as I usually work Wednesdays, but they hate paying me F-status rate on testing days.
