Another great piece. Right on spot and can apply to any “yellow union”. It can be any union that thinks about power more than serving members not knowing that serving members is the power of the union. “Unionism” is a principal that is even in the first Amendment itself and the constitution and even the drafting of the document itself. The constitution has many flaws but the power of it is the flexibility to be corrected in the right direction towards justice and equity. That is why they say the constitution is a living document. All unions in the city and state are on notice serve the members if not unions will die. Adjust yourself. This includes all unions in the MLC. UFT, DC37, TWU 100. Retirees earned their healthcare and the city/state should be pumping money in instead of pumping money out of healthcare for a aging population.

Absolutely. It's shameful that our bosses run around trying to make money for Eric Adams. It's like they have zero awareness he's our contractual adversary.

I don’t think you love Medicare. You love our GHI Senior Care’s supplemental coverage to Medicare. Who wouldn’t? People outside our unions have to pay big bucks for that kind of additional coverage. Medicare leaves a ton of costs on the table. If you don’t have supplemental coverage of some kind, you’re out of pocket for those, full stop. Here’ a sample: Part A ($1600 hospital deductible every benefit period, days 61-90 $400/day, days 91-150 $800/day; rehab days 21-100 $200/day). Part B (20% of all costs, sometimes copays as well; no out of pocket max!). Part D is all private for-profit companies (deductibles, copays, coinsurances). The cheapest supplement right now that covers all the A/B stuff is $3372/year. On top of that huge amount GHI is protecting us from, which is already saying a lot, we get reimbursed the Part B premium and for the rich among us, IRMAA as well. For spouses too, even though they may not have served the City of NY. It’s important to separate what is Medicare -- for the hoi polloi and/or for people choosing not to buy supplementary coverage -- and what is purchased or contractually given to you by unions to fill in those HORRENDOUS gaps in Medicare coverage. Restructure the whole darn thing: Medicare for All.

I agree about Medicare for All, or short of that, NYHA. When I talk about Medicare, I include the Senior Care. Of course we need both.
