I’m glad that as retirees we are standing up and fighting for our rights and for ourselves.

It's amazing, to me at least. I was very reluctant to retire. I worried it would diminish my credibility as a commentator on education. Who could have predicted that, this very year, we would become the leaders of this movement? I'm glad too. Also grateful.

Do you know the status of the bills in the City Council and the New York legislature regarding preserving Medicare and Medicare supplement insurance at no cost for NYC retirees?

Off the top of my head, the City bill lacks support, and the NYS bills have support, but are stalled because of "union opposition." Marianne would know better than I would.

It is incredible that a union would oppose protecting the health care of retirees. Hopefully, the RTC will make that clear to the UFT.

To be clear, it's not really union opposition. It's union leadership opposition. Mulgrew says he no longer opposes this. I've written repeatedly that, then, he needs to do something about it. I know they read this, and that's why I say, like Norm, "Watch what they do, not what they say."
