I think that when people like me tell in-service people the issues, we do not look like the scary radical monsters that Unity makes us look like. Yesterday, at a school I was subbing at, a new teacher I was working with did not even know what Unity was. During lunch, I sat in the lunchroom and as soon as a teacher started bemoan Tier 6, I started to talk and got a lot of questions. Next week, in a school I am going to sub in, the DR is coming during the lunch periods. I plan to be there to ask a few pointed questions. It will be interesting to see what happens. The bottom line is that Unity is terrified that we got our foot in the door and they know why plan to pull it wide open.
Is there a reason why you believe that District Reps should not be able to email members in their Districts? And when you use the word "bypass," what are you really trying to say? Do you realize that District Reps are there to support members, and provide information to Chapter Leaders, and all members in the schools to which they have been assigned? Do you know that Chapter Leaders and District Reps work in Lock-Step with each other? Maybe take a moment to read about the role and responsibilities of a District Rep. I would suggest that before you make anything an issue, you first find out about it, then think about the value of having it in place. Division through misinformation is only for self-indulgence and shows narcism. Not very union-like!
If we had real union democracy, the CL and DR would work together through the sharing of ideas. That was not the case when I was a CL. First, I was forbidden at the DA from asking Mulgrew questions. Second, I was being harassed by a Unity member in my school who had a patronage job. Even when this person assaulted me, the DR took the side of this person. If I had the chance for a do over, I would have called the police instead of the DR.
Thanks for keeping us informed. My politics are not that of the union so I kept my mouth shut when I was still teaching. I wish there were a free flow of opinion in the union. I found its one-side opinions offensive.
Totalitarian control
It kind of feels that way.

Interesting the teacher doesn't even know what Unity is. Apathy is Unity's best friend.

If we had real union democracy, CLs would still elect DRs. The high school teachers would elect their own VP.
If I'm not mistaken, I provided examples. Love the name-calling!

Me too! Don't forget to vote in May. And thanks for reading.
It’s time for UFT District Leaders to show real leadership and become change agents for advocacy!
Absolutely. That will happen in May, when we vote for democracy and representation that works for us, as opposed to our contractual adversaries.
