“I’d argue that using our dues money to celebrate the man who made sure our voices were not heard, even in our own chapter meetings, is just about as uncivil as things get.“

I agree Arthur. Why not ask the members if this is a wise use of our money. I wish a good retirement to Murphy but why at the expense of members? Let his peers and compadres throw him a retirement party privately like many schools do for their teachers.

I also agree on the thoughtless way Dec23 was handled. UNITY. Loves to rile up folks.

Yes it's remarkable how tough it is from them to learn from their mistakes. They expect that no one pays attention. More and more, they're wrong.

I cannot believe that they're giving that guy an award when he was overwhelmingly voted out by the retirees for doing such a horrible job.

Unity doesn't see it that way. Murphy did exactly as he was told, ignoring the will of the actual union. For that, they'd make him a General (if they only could).

Celebration to pledge devotion to Mulgrew, harps out in sentiments of enduring love to the Murphy who made so much off our backs. A giant “screw you” to membership who’d maybe, like to survive a health crisis by retaining Medicare.

It is a big "screw you" to celebrate an ostensible leader who works to cut our benefits. In a way, though, it's not Murphy's fault. After all, he was only following orders. I realize that's not the best defense, but it's certainly the one that's kept him on both the UFT and AFT payrolls, while the rest of us contribute to NYC Retirees to do the work we pay Mulgrew and Murphy for.

The appeal to sentiment, mawkish and cloying, attaches that crucial devotional clique to Murphy, and they hope to Mulgrew. Watch for the “history lessons,” what our miracle union has done for you. The types who like to worship…yes, teachers of the worshiping, sentimental type. Prepare for ballon busting…

In fairness, this is not faith-based. They're all paid.

I would not go to his luncheon if they paid me. Maybe we should put out a resolution about whether he should even have a luncheon.

Well, everyone's entitled to luncheon. I read somewhere that food is an important part of a balanced diet. Of course, whether or not it happens at the Hilton may be another question.
