Please write about how it came about that trs pays 7% fixed rate on tda and other retired city employees get 8 1/4%.

This happened after the 2005 contract. Randi had agreed we'd come back two days in August. To get that back, she agreed to a reduction, for us only. It was one in a long series of terrible Unity deals. Not sure whether I'll devote an entire column to it, but I'll keep it in mind. Thank you for your suggestion.

randi had me removed from a meeting where she was "selling" the great idea of going down to 7% for two days of not going back to work....I pointed out that she was permanently selling out retirees (and the rest of us ultimately)...she dissembled...I politely commented that she hadn't answered my question as to how this was a good thing....and I was removed from the meeting...

Randi has a way of explaining anything. Then you go home and ask yourself what the hell it was she said. Evidently she wasn't successful with you.

Hold on, isn’t that being Talmudic?

Maybe. Is that what it means?

Dunno. It’s all about optics for Weingarten. Whatever she thinks makes her look good to te whatever audience she’s aiming to look good for.

on such occasions, I always politely asked her to clarify and politely pointed out that she hadn't answered my question....and she always wasn't happy with me...and on more than the above mentioned occasion, if I kept trying to get her to give a clear answer to the actual question I asked, she had me removed....such fun...such an embrace of democracy and transparency.....

I recall Weingarten announcing at a DA that she was just trying to be Talmudic. Uh huh lady. You’re about as Talmudic, as well, reader please fill in the blank.

Well, you've got me there. I have no idea what that even means.

I was the chapter leader when the vote was held for this percentage reduction. I do not want to repeat here the stupidities heard from staff clamoring to get those two vacation days back. Two days which have been long forgotten now that everyone comes in BEFORE Labor Day to set up.

Wow. I was not yet very involved in union then, and had just started blogging.. I didn't even realize it was voted on. Kind of surprised it passed, though I guess if that's what Unity wanted, that's what they did.

most welcome....when I read your pieces like this one, it makes me feel like I had a kindred spirit as a teacher and a chapter leader. wish I knew you while I was teaching

Thanks Peter. That is so kind. I think, though, the overwhelming majority of us are accepting and sympathetic. It's kind of our job to be that way.

I agree....what I was talking about was your way of thinking and your approach...not just the acceptance and sympathy (and empathy)....you also may not remember that I am a former unity member who quit unity because of their approaches

Thanks. I have vague memories from my NYC Educator days. I know several ex-Unity members these days. Glad people are seeing the light. It gives me hope.

I originally was independent...and never was a big fan of unity, but my district asked me to join because she said I would get better service and help from the union on issues as a chapter leader...so I did....but was super unhappy with the contract that guaranteed the permanent givebacks of 600million a year in healthcare....was going to quit then, but DR convinced me not to as I might need them in retirement....then once they did the med advantage thing I was completely done...and by the way, loved amy arundul who I worked with a bunch....

Those who demean and discredit others should first take a good look into their souls. Ask themselves if they are pointing and loathing at their own reflections as well as

the truth or false statements created by misinformation.

Thank you once again Arthur for exposing the rot of UnityUFT . Please don’t stop- we must restore the moral compass of our Union which has lost its way.

I looked up Aqeel and shared his official “portrait” from the UFT website. He should be removed from his many well paid tax funded jobs. Maybe he could join the Adams administration instead.

I'm shocked at the way they handled this. They could have apologized. Instead, they applauded. These are the leaders of our union, and in their opinion, that was the best way to handle this situation. Their judgment is abysmal, and these are people who presume to represent us.

They give them jobs and offer them trips. And they make them swear to support whatever they're told to.

Yes of course. Moral compass be damned. Who gets targeted for indoctrination into the cult? I don’t think it’s random. Very calculated. I leave that for anyone to ponder.

It's usually chapter leaders, but not always. But long experience tells me it's based on loyalty rather than competence. I've seen outlandish arguments by Unity members right on this page. This post, in fact, is largely based on them.

You are absolutely correct in all yu our assertions I sent him an email with my full name and title. As I expected, there was no answer. I said one cannot escape this earth without luckily becoming old. The alternative is far worse. I looked him up. He is Muslim and a person of color. I said someone like you should be more attuned to the feelings of others. I am sure I would be royally screwed if I did something similar against my colleagues.

Anyone working for the union ought to know better than to propagate ageist stereotypes. Our leadership thinks otherwise, and openly applauds it. I cannot get over just how stupid that is, and the utter lack of forward thinking it shows.
